Curling Etiquette
and general rules of play
Our curling season is underway and this is a reminder to all members to brush up on your rules and etiquette.

Most curlers do not strictly enforce these rules but it is nice for us, as a club, to have general knowledge of them. Every member's knowledge of the rules and etiquette reflect on our whole club.

ROCKIN' THE HOUSE
Calling All New Members!!

The Board knows that most new members join the club after a friend, family member or co-worker has introduced them to curling. WE NEED YOU to help us introduce this exciting sport to those you know. We will be having an OPEN HOUSE week of FREE curling for those interested starting October 15th to the 18th. All leagues will start the following week but no "stats" will be recorded. Please encourage new members to come out and realize what fun they have been missing. Please be patient and flexible as we try to introduce curling to new potential members
** Remember for every new member you bring to the Club you will receive 25 Bar Bucks.**

Swing and Sweep and Opening Party- October 18th

Golfing and Curling go hand-in-hand in this great event. As the clubs go away and the rocks start flying members can take part in both activities on October 18th. We are hoping to have two full draws this year, followed by an opening party for all club members. Ron and Joan Kettle will coordinate this event.

Food and Golf - 2-4-1 Books

Again this year we will be selling the 2-4-1 books. There will be some changes in the books and we will advise members as soon as we are informed of the changes. Members are encouraged to try to sell as many as possible, as the club does make a $10.00 profit per sale.

B-I-N-G-O ! Volunteers Needed

Bingos are a large part of fundraising for our club. We only require 3 people to run each bingo and there is NO SMOKING in the hall. If you can help out with bingos, please fill out your membership application accordingly. A board member will call you in advance. You will be rewarded with $10.00 in Bar Bucks for each bingo that you work.

Cleaning The Club- Volunteers Needed! - October 4th

Due to unforeseen costs over the past seasons the Board of Directors has decided to call on the members to help with a Fall Club Cleanup. Prior to last year, cleaning the club had cost us $500. 00. We need volunteers to descend on the club on October 4th to sweep the summer dust away. Cleaning materials will be supplied. Start time is 9:00 am.

Equipment

Comfort is the key to enjoying curling. A beginner curler can be equipped at little expense, for the purpose of trying the sport. The following gear is recommended: clean running shoes, stretchy pants or sweat pants, a warm sweater and gloves. Brooms and sliders are available for club use. Curling equipment- shoes, gloves, sliders, brooms, etc. can be purchased through the SPCC Pro Shop. (Call Joe Drummond at 825-7255 for curling supplies needed.)

Fund Raising

Gord Wonnick is heading up a committee to distribute gift cards from local businesses. The club will receive 3 per cent of the sales of the gift cards. (If we sell $1000. 00 worth of gift cards, we will get $30.00). Volunteers will be needed to assist Gord in this endeavor. Please contact Gord at 326-4842 if you are willing to help.

Off Season Web Site Updates
In the off season the website will be undergoing some changes.

Before the 2008/2009 season starts I hope to have categories set up so we have defined sections for Mens/Womens/Bonspiels/Sponsors/Pro Shop and any other category anyone can think of.

Also, for each one of these categories I would like to assign someone to keep those areas updated. No HTML or web experiance will be needed. The Admin side will be easy to use for anyone with little experience using computers.

For now if you would like something on the website you can email David Neufeld dave@sunparlourcurling. Just include any text and pictures you want posted.

Thanks,

Jam Can Curling?
Once in a while, after a game, talk would get around to what we did as youngsters growing up. Many or most always recalled playing street hockey. In recalling my youth, raised in Saskatchewan, I can't ever remember playing street hockey. But I certainly recall what we did play. Jam can curling. At least that's what we called it.

When our mother would empty a can we would fill it with water, leave it outside and we would have our curling rocks. We not only played on patches of ice around town, mostly along the railroad tracks, we also played at recess and noon hour at school. I recall many bonspiels that took place at school and someone always seemed to put their pencil case up as the prize.

Click Here to see photos, you can see the patches of ice that we played on. Do you recognize that form in the hack?? Yep that's me and my corn broom getting set to deliver my "rock". All the boys played quite regularly and we had a lot of games going on at the same time.

One other event I remember is listening to curling on the radio!! One year,a fellow from town was playing in the Saskatchewan School Boys Final and it was broadcast on the radio. We drew circles on a piece of cardboard and used coloured pop bottle caps to mark the spot on the ice as the announcers described the shots. Yeh,you're right, there wasn't much to do during the winter in rural Saskatchewan back in the fifties!!!!!!

Wally Ellsworth skipped the winning team, Les Kovacs from Kingsville was second place team and Herb Grundner’s team finished third. We also had a raffle to support Junior Curling, Kevin Stubbert won the TV, Jim Hayes won the DVD player and Robert Levrun won the $100. This draw took place at the Swing and Sweep event.

That’s it for this season, it has been fun sharing our curling information with you and hope to be able to do so again next season. In the meantime if anyone is interested in curling next winter we will have plenty of information available for you before the season starts. You will not regret becoming part of this club.

Kingsville Ladies 2 Day Wild Goose Bonspiel - March 10 and 11
Congratulations to Julie Armstrong's team, being Julie Armstrong, Joan Kettle, Darlene Graham and Dana Waites for winning the Kingsville Ladies 2 Day Wild Goose Bonspiel held on March 10 and 11 at Kingsville Curling Club. Playoffs Begin This Week
Last week I reported that we had both men’s and ladies curling last weekend in the Ontario Regional Intermediate Championship, unfortunately after great starts in their first two wins both teams went down to defeat and will have to try again next year. Our only remaining curlers in provincial competition Wayne and Carol Quinn who were competing in the Senior Mixed Championship were also eliminated and too will need to wait till next year. For these curlers to have even reached this level is a major accomplishment and we congratulate them.

Skip Linda Patkau, Vice Carol Quinn, Second Lesley Keene, Lead Sharon Stevenson competed Sat. March 1 at Ilderton Curling Club in a Ladies 1-day bonspiel finishing first in their draw. Congratulations ladies.

Preparations are now complete for our 38th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Senior Bonspiel which is played on March 12. We have a nice combination of local and out of town entries and look forward to a fun day.

A few days later on March 15 – 16 our Men’s Two Day Bonspiel will be held. The committee has worked very hard to put together a nice entry and we expect to have real good curling and the competition will be keen.

Most of our leagues will begin playoffs this week to determine the various winners for the season. Playoffs will continue for a couple of weeks and then we wind down a very good curling year.

By Gordon Wonnick
The Season is starting to wind down
There are only a couple of events left on the curling calendar for this year, we are busy finishing off regular schedules so that playoffs can begin in a couple of weeks.

On March 12 Sun Parlour will be hosting our annual Seniors Bonspiel. It is always a well-received event and we anticipate a full entry of 16 teams.

On March 15 we begin our annual Men’s Two Day Bonspiel again we anticipate a good entry and look forward to good curling.

The February 23 rd weekend was a good weekend for Sun Parlour curlers. Wayne and Carol Quinn joined forces with FrankWilloughby and Debbie Brosseau from Kingsville Curling Club and won our zone in Seniors Mixed Provincial play downs. They will now move on to Regional finals.

Also our ladies hosted a one-day bonspiel on the 23rd weekend. We had teams from Chatham, Roseland in Windsor, and two teams from Beachgrove. The team of Sandra Martin form our own club came out on top. Kelly Jacob, Lou-Anne Bigley and Suzanne Stepfura ably assisted Sandra. Congratulations ladies.

This weekend we have both ladies and men competing in regional play-downs in Ontario Intermediate Championship, we will have results in next weeks report.

What an incredible week of curling. The competitors in the Men’s and Ladies Ontario Provincial Masters Championship did not disappoint, the shot making was what you would expect at a Provincial final.

In the men’s competition it went right down to an extra end on the final draw of the competition to decide the champion. In front of a jam-packed clubhouse full of cheering fans the final game was a real nail biter and provided top-notch entertainment. Defending Ontario and Canadian Championship team skipped by Bob Edmondson from the Oakville Curling Club was playing Axel Larsen from the Midland Curling Club. If Larsen wins it would create a tiebreaker game on Sunday, however, Edmondson won the game in an extra end to repeat as Ontario champ and have the honor of representing us in the Canadian Championship.

In the ladies competition the team skipped by Pam Bothwell from Guelph Country Club was just a little too strong for the field. Pam and her team finished with a perfect record of 7 wins and no losses. There were many games in the ladies competition that were very close and featured outstanding shot making.

Our congratulations go not only to the champions but also to all the curlers that put on a display of good curling and good sportsmanship for the many fans that came out to watch.

We must acknowledge all the volunteers who did an outstanding job in putting on a first class event. The week included a banquet for all the curlers, members, and invited guests. 110 people enjoyed an outstanding meal and enjoyed the entertainment. Also, on Thursday the men were treated to lunch and Friday was the ladies turn. Everything ran like clockwork and Sun Parlour Club should be proud.

Last week I mentioned that the one thing needed to put this event over the top was for the general public to show support, support was shown in spades. Curling fans of Leamington, thank you very much.

Tim Hortons Master Men : Overview
Tim Hortons Master Women : Overview

Curlers ages 6 - 16
always welcome on Sunday afternoons
Lets not forget the younger members of our club. Kids from 6 – 16 get together every Sunday at 1:00pm and have a lot of fun learning the fundamentals of curling. Sparky and Amy Belanger are qualified coaches and enjoy working with the kids. The fee is nominal and we have about 15 – 20 kids each week. They are taught proper etiquette as well as fundamentals; etiquette has always been a big part of curling. The kids also have fun each week, they enjoy pop and chips and once in a while, as they did this past Sunday, they have pizza. We would encourage parents to get their kids involved, just bring them to the club to see for themselves

Stick Curling by Gordon Wonnick
This being a low activity week gives the opportunity for me to include some information on “STICK CURLING”. Many of us have had a lot of knee problems that make curling very difficult, in particular getting down in the hack to deliver the curling rock. However, in recent years someone developed a “stick” which when used to deliver the rock eliminates the need to get down in the hack. This method of delivering a rock is being used by both ladies and men and is within the rules of curling and can be used in any Ontario Curling Association sanctioned event.

The “stick” is approximately as long as a curling broom and has on the end of it a small device that fits over the handle of the rock. This enables the user to control the rock during delivery and also to give it the proper turn. When using the “stick” the player starts by standing in the normal hack and then takes a few steps and pushes the rock with the “stick”. It is quite easy to get familiar with the process and reopens the game for many that were forced to give it up.

If you have any interest in trying “stick curling” why not come to the club and give it a try. We have all the necessary equipment; you only need footwear that will prevent falls.

Gordon Wonnick's full curling article can be found in the Leamington Post.

Beach Grove Golf and Country Club
42nd Annual Ladies Centennial Bonspiel
This past weekend we had four of our ladies teams compete in the Beach Grove Golf and Country Club 42nd Annual Ladies Centennial Bonspiel. As luck would have it our teams met each other in the playoffs.
